Spiny oyster shell can come in 3 different colors —red, orange and purple. The colors are determined by the depth of the water where they are harvested. Originally spiny oysters were harvested by free divers so depth was very critical to the cost of the shell. This necklace of graduated disks separated by spacers of bright orange sponge coral is a lovely collection of shell showing all three colors.
